Going Solar Guide

How much can solar really cut your TNB bill?

Most people don't call us because they love solar panels. They call because the TNB bill keeps creeping up, and they want a straight answer to one question: how much will I actually save? So here's an honest look — no hype — at what rooftop solar really does to a Malaysian home's monthly bill, and what makes the number bigger or smaller.

The short version: solar saves you money mainly by covering the electricity you'd otherwise buy from TNB during daylight hours. Your panels generate the most around mid-day; whatever your home uses at that moment comes from the roof instead of the grid. Under Solar ATAP, any extra you don't use is exported and credited, which trims the bill further. The more of your usage that lands in daylight, the more you save.

What actually decides your savings

There's no single "RM X per month" figure that fits every house, and anyone who promises one before seeing your bill is guessing. In practice, four things move the needle:

A realistic example

Take a typical double-storey home — say in Klang or Bukit Mertajam — with a TNB bill of around RM350 to RM450 a month and reasonable daytime usage. On a sunny, unshaded roof, a system in the region of 5 kWac can offset a large share of that daytime consumption.

Rough monthly picture (illustrative, not a quote)

Bill before solar: ~RM400/month

Typical reduction for this profile: around RM150–RM300/month

Payback for many homes like this: roughly 5–8 years, then 20+ years of low bills.

These are estimates to show how the maths works — your home isn't "average". We size every system to your actual roof and your last few bills, not a brochure figure.

Where the rebate changes the maths

The single biggest lever on payback is the upfront cost — and that's exactly where the SuRIA Home rebate helps. The government rebate pays RM600 for every 1 kWac installed, up to RM3,000, paid by TNB straight into your own bank account after your system is commissioned and verified. A 5 kWac system reaches the full RM3,000.

On top of that, Astern Technologies is running its own promotional extra of up to RM4,000 (outright purchase only, limited quota, terms & conditions apply) — so up to RM7,000 off in total. Knock that off the upfront price and you can pull payback forward by a year or two. One honest caveat: the government pot is capped at RM150 million and handed out first-come, first-served until 31 December 2026, so it isn't guaranteed to last — installing earlier gives you a better chance of catching it.

When solar saves you less

We'd rather be straight with you than oversell, because a badly-matched system is how people end up disappointed. Solar saves less if nobody's home during the day and you barely run aircon until night, if your roof is heavily shaded or faces north, or if the system is oversized for what your household actually uses. In those cases we'll tell you — and either right-size the system or be honest that the numbers are borderline. A system that fits your usage beats a big one that looks impressive on paper.

So — is it worth it?

For most Malaysian homes with decent daytime usage and a reasonably clear roof, the answer is yes: solar typically pays for itself in around five to eight years and keeps running for two decades or more, with the rebate shortening that further. But the only way to know your number — not a generic one — is a proper look at your roof and your recent TNB bills. That part is free, and there's no obligation.
